First month just water, then start veg nutrients?

Wondering what would be expected to happen, my friend has told me that he knows someone who's done this outside before. He said last time he did it there was 7 plants that sprouted, bugs or something (cant remember the story) ate the 6 plants except the one good strong one, so he wasn't sure whether he should have started with nutrients whether or not it would still increase the growth in veg state...ya know?
