I lived in Portland in the late 70s and early 80s and it kind of blows me away that Deering Oaks Park will be the sight of a pro lesbian/gay rights issue. I was a young and coming out dyke who found a lot of solace during a difficult period in my life in that park, and at that time, it was decidedly not OK to be gay. It's been a long time since I've lived in Portland, but I have to say, it kind of blew me away that Deering Oaks Park has become a rallying place for lesbian and gay Downeastahs.
