Aare canaries friendly and a good pet to have?

Aare canaries friendly and a good pet to have?
I've had a canary when i was little and I barely remember it. I also had a parakeeet that ws such a nice bird I always took it out of the cage and It played with me as a child, but the second parakeet I got wasnt friendly at all!
So please tell me if canaries are friendly and fun to let out of the cage and play with? Or if not what other type of bird would you recommend and not a parrot since they grow to be so big. Something small!
